The fine texture of zoysia grass makes it a wonderful turf cover, though its slow growth and long dormant season make it difficult to establish. Common zoysia is low maintenance turf grass established through either vegetative parts or seeds. Its stolons and rhizomes build leaves that resemble Bermuda grass in texture. Mow at ¾-inch to 1 ¼-inch.
Zoysia leaves and stems are strong and rigid which enables it to handle a good deal of traffic. The heat and drought tolerances of zoysia grass enable it to grow well during the summer months. Zoysia is more shade tolerant than Bermuda grass, but only where it’s warm year-round. Zoysia grass suits well with low-maintenance lawns where slow establishment isn’t a concern.
