Planting Grass Seed in Arkansas

Although Arkansas is a traditional zone, the primary grass is bermudagrass. Your fescues, ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass can grow well in the fall and winter but will struggle to survive during the warm summer months and are better suited for over-seeding in the fall.

Below are some of the different grasses that will grow in Arkansas.

  • Bermudagrass – all of the state.
  • Bahiagrass – Southern areas and used primarily on pastures.
  • Kentucky Bluegrass – Northern, cooler zones.
  • Centipedegrass – Central and Southern parts.
  • St. Augustine Grass – Warmer, humid southern areas.
  • Perennial Ryegrass – best used for over-seeding warm-season grass like bermuda in the fall.
  • Tall Fescue – Central and Northern cooler regions of the state.
  • Zoysiagrass – all areas but a slower establishment time compared to bermuda.

Click on one of the grasses for planting details and then visit the Planting Grass Seed page for detailed instructions on how to correctly prepare your soil and plant your grass seed for your lawn.
